A Practical Guide to Caring for Your Activewear

Looking after activewear does not need to be complicated. A consistent routine starts with the instructions for the garment you own. Fabric blends, trims, prints, and fastenings can require different treatment, so use the care label as your first reference rather than applying one rule to every piece.

Read the label before the first wash

Check the recommended washing temperature, drying method, and any restrictions on ironing, bleaching, or dry cleaning. If the label and general advice differ, follow the garment’s instructions. Contact the retailer if the guidance is missing or unclear.

Keep product information somewhere easy to find. It can be useful when comparing the care requirements of a new piece with your existing laundry routine.

Prepare the garment

Empty pockets and check that there are no small items caught inside the garment. Secure zippers and other fastenings where appropriate, and separate pieces that could snag against rough hardware.

Sort your laundry with colour transfer in mind, particularly when washing a new dark or strongly coloured garment for the first time. Avoid packing the machine so tightly that clothes cannot move freely.

Choose the wash for the actual fabric

Use a cycle and detergent suitable for the garment’s care instructions. Measure detergent according to the product guidance and load size instead of assuming more is better.

Do not assume that every activewear item should receive fabric softener or other laundry additives. Check both the garment label and the laundry product’s suitability before using them. Where instructed, turn printed or decorated pieces inside out.

Dry without guessing

The care label should guide whether you can tumble dry, line dry, or dry flat. If tumble drying is permitted, use the specified setting. A garment that looks similar to another item may still need a different drying method.

Give garments enough space to dry fully before putting them away. Use a drying position that supports the shape of the item, and follow any guidance about direct heat or sunlight.

Store and inspect

Put clean, fully dry pieces in a place where they are not compressed around sharp objects or snagging hardware. When folding or hanging a garment, consider its weight and construction.

Occasionally check seams, zippers, and high-use areas. If something catches or feels damaged, inspect it before forcing the fastening or continuing to wear the garment.

Keep the routine realistic

The best care routine is one you can follow consistently. Check instructions when you buy, prepare each load thoughtfully, and give your kit time to dry. These small habits make it easier to keep your training wardrobe ready for its next outing.
